STEVE “BLOCKER” ROACH
FORMER INTERNATIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYER & COMMENTATOR
Steve “Blocker” Roach is a legendary figure in Australian rugby league — renowned both for his formidable on‑field presence and his authentic voice in the media. As one of the toughest and most respected prop forwards of the 1980s and early 1990s, Roach’s career was defined by physical power, skillful ball play, and an uncompromising competitive spirit.
Born in Wollongong, New South Wales, Roach made his first‑grade debut for the Balmain Tigers in 1982 and went on to play over 180 games for the club, including appearances in two classic grand finals.
At representative level, he became a mainstay for New South Wales in the State of Origin series, playing 17 games between 1984 and 1991 and contributing to multiple series victories. Roach also earned 20 Test caps for Australia, touring with the Kangaroos in both 1986 and 1990 and competing against top international opposition.
After retiring from professional rugby league in the early 1990s, Roach transitioned into a successful media career. His deep tactical understanding of the game, candid commentary style, and engaging personality quickly made him a respected voice on television and radio. He has worked with major networks and shows, including Channel Nine, 2UE, 2GB and Fox Sports, and appeared on programs such as The Game Plan.
Roach’s contributions to the sport have been recognised with induction into the NRL Hall of Fame and the NSW Rugby League Hall of Fame, celebrating both his achievements as a player and his ongoing influence in rugby league culture.
