TELEVISION JOURNALIST AND REPORTER, CHANNEL 9

Damian Ryan is one of Australia’s most experienced and respected journalists, with a career spanning more than four decades across radio, television and international reporting.

Raised in Wagga Wagga, Damian began his journalism career in 1980 at 2WG before moving through Wollongong’s 2WL and joining Sydney’s 2GB in 1984. His transition to television came in 1990 with Channel 10, followed by a move to the Nine Network in 1994 — where he became a key figure in some of the network’s most significant news coverage.

As a foreign correspondent based in London, Damian reported on major global events from across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. His international assignments include the Boxing Day Tsunami, the London bombings, the Mumbai massacre, wars in the Middle East including Israel and Lebanon, the Japan earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster, the shooting down of MH17 in Ukraine, the Bali Nine and the Schapelle Corby case, as well as the death and funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Closer to home, Damian has covered some of Australia’s most confronting and defining news events, including the Thredbo landslide, the Lindt Café siege and the Bondi Junction terror attack.

Damian’s work has been recognised at the highest level. He won a Walkley Award for his coverage of the Interlaken canyoning tragedy, in which 21 tourists — including 14 Australians — lost their lives, and shared a Logie Award for Nine’s coverage of the Victorian bushfires.

In sport, Damian has reported from 13 Olympic Games, three Commonwealth Games, three Rugby World Cups, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, an Ashes series and Wimbledon — bringing authority and perspective to some of the world’s biggest sporting moments.

With a career defined by trust, calm under pressure and an unwavering commitment to accurate storytelling, Damian Ryan remains a respected voice in Australian media.
